Legendary South African musician Hugh Masekela has died aged 78. The trumpeter and composer’s family released a statement confirming the news, writing: ‘After a protracted and courageous battle with prostate cancer, he passed peacefully in Johannesburg, South Africa surrounded by his family.’
Masekela had been battling prostate cancer since 2008, undergoing eye surgery in March 2016 after the cancer spread.
His solo career spanned over five decades, and has released over 40 albums.
