Women’s March 2018: Thousands of Protesters Take to the Streets

Thousands of turned out for the rally at Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC and a march from the National Mall to Lafayette Park. One year after millions of people took to the streets in what became the largest single-day protest in the history of America, the Women's March returned, reignited by movements like #MeToo and #TimesUp, as well as the fight to protect DACA and immigrants' rights.

Here are some emotional speeches:

Viola Davis, Los Angeles

"Every single day, your job as an American citizen is not just to fight for your rights, but it is to fight for the right of every individual that is taking a breath, whose heart is pumping and breathing on this earth. I am speaking today not just for the 'Me Toos,' because I was a 'Me Too,' but when I raise my hand, I am aware of all the women who are still in silence. The women who are faceless. The women who don't have the money and don't have the constitution and who don't have the confidence and who don't have the images in our media that gives them a sense of self-worth enough to break their silence that is rooted in the shame of assault and rooted in the stigma of assault."

Whoopi Goldberg, New York City

"The only way we're going to make a change is if we commit to change. We have to decide that the people who represent us have to represent all of us. They can't represent some of us. We're all human beings and have a right to say, 'This is how I want to be spoken to. I don't want to be spoken to like you own me, like you think you can touch me when I say you cannot.' We are here to say—as women—we're not taking it anymore. It's just not going to happen."

Hope Alive Mission Fundraising Benefit For Domestic Abuse Charity SafeLives

The Hope Alive Mission fundraising in aid of domestic abuse charity SafeLives took place on Saturday 13 January at Mama Africa Restaurant, 25-27 Watford Way Hendon, NW4 3JH London, 2-6pm. The event is an annual charity initiative founded by the Director of Kitenge Festival UK Jo Nganda.

The aim of the event was to hear from the community and survivors about their issues and experiences and how we might work together to address them. At the event guests heard stories from Survivors of abuse ranging from child abuse, abuse within relationships and sexual abuse from special guest speakers Zina Arinze (Divorce reinvention Queen and Author of Reinvent You, How to go from We to Me after Divorce) and Mary Mambwa (Founder of 'In Her Mind and President, JCI Greenwich), Ebony Ali (Miss Ebony UK 2017) and Laura Entwistle (Ms Galaxy Ireland 2018). Guests also explored ways of recognising and dealing with the effects of domestic abuse followed by an open discussion about concerns in the community and how we can work together to support those affected.
All attendees received certificates of appreciation for their donations and they enjoyed entertainment by Marianna Zappi (Ambassador, Women’s Trust).

All proceeds will go towards supporting the services of the charity SafeLives and the amazing work they are doing to end domestic abuse for good. Because of such amazing events and people like these SafeLives were able to help more than 60,000 victims of domestic abuse, and nearly 80,000 children last year.

Domestic abuse affects us all; it thrives on being hidden behind closed doors. We must make it everybody’s business. No one should live in fear. It is not acceptable, not inevitable, and together – we can make it stop.

Demystifying The Queens Birthday & New Years Honours List
Have you ever wondered why or how someone receives a BEM, MBE, OBE, CBE or DBE honour on The Queen's Birthday or New Year’s Honours List. How do you nominate someone to receive this, and do you know someone who deserves to be nominated?
As part of a Black History Month roadshow to encourage more minorities and women to be nominated for the honours, you are invited to attend a presentation to help you find out more about how the system works, entitled Demystifying the British Honours System.

We want to encourage more nominations for women and BAME communities.
This is not just for the perceived great and good, but for anyone carrying out supportive work in their community beyond the call of their work or duty, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
Ken Olisa OBE Lord Lieutenant Greater London, invites you to come and hear from people just like you, who have stories just like yours, and how they got their investiture.
Dr Yvonne Thompson CBE will open the event and Donna Fraser will chair the panel session and Head of Honours Secretariat will make a presentation and answer questions.
